Why?
- We'll never support all tabular packages. Personally, I am using booktabs (exclusively).
- The lyxview, e.g. for fixed width cols, is not exact (wrong rowbreaks etc.). But why should
it? IMHO we could (offer a) split between edit and preview, like in mathed.

The preview inset (which I don't like) is a workaround. IMHO the insets themselves should get a "preview" option, without having to nest them inside another inset.

What is special about tables? Why not also figures, program listings, URL inset, etc.? Could we list all of these in the Tools > Preferences > Display and have checkboxes that the user could control?
Some insets probably don't make sense to put there, for example footnote.
Juergen, if you agree with the above, then I would make a new ticket, and close this one. If you disagree then we will leave this one.

I think we should keep this open, since tabular seems to need more work (it is not just implementing preview in insettext).
