#2421 closed defect (wontfix)

Encoding errors in german l10n

Description

I just installed lyx-gtk 1.4.0 on my Ubuntu Breezy system. Looks fine, but the
german Umlaute are displayed falsely. Seems to be an encoding error, since the
Umlaute are replaced with two characters: ü=ü, etc. This often happens when
opening UTF-8 encoded files with iso-8859-1 or so.

This is related to #1954.

Have backed out patch from #1954. Menus and toolbars at least should work in
current subversion - they do for me in ubuntu/de_DE.UTF8

I have just installed the 1.4.1 ubuntu packages from the lyx homepage. The
problem still exists: Umlaute are displayed falsely and in the console there
is this error message:

Locale de_DE could not be set

Any news on this?
It also happens with the qt frontend, so it is not entirely the same as #1954.

Altering component, since this is not gtk-specific.

I don't think this is terribly likely to get worked on before the overall
unicode transition.

If it happens also in qt the reason is probably that you don't have the
de_DE.iso88591 locale. This is indicated by the message "Locale de_DE could not
be set". Create this locale with the locale-gen or localedef command, and it
should work.

My problem was indeed caused by the user lacking the proper locales.
Thanks for pointing that out to me!
So it seems to be a gtk-frontend thing after all, so someone with higher
"powers" than me might want to change Component back to gtk-frontend. :)

This bug refers to the GTK frontend which is no longer supported in 1.5.0.

Moreover, since GTK bugs will no longer be fixed in the 1.4.X, I mark this bug
report as WONTFIX.
