Description
This might be a double posting...
"Auto-apply" is a bit uninformative, how about changing the name to
"Apply immediately" or "Apply at once"?
I asked a colleague for a "user's opinion", here's his response:
I'd like to ask your opinion about the dialog: Layout->Character
[snip]
- Do you know what the check-box does?
No
- Does the name "Auto-apply" give you an idea of how it works?
Not really. Maybe after some tests.
If you didn't know what Auto apply does:
Basically if you check the box AND have some text selected, the changes
are applied immediately when you click on some setting in the Character
dialog. (rather than wait for you to click Apply).
Final question:
- Do you think: "Apply immediately" or "Apply at once" would be better (easier to understand) than "Auto-apply"?
Maybe better but not good enough.
I think that if the button is checked, the Apply (and possible the OK
button) should disappear.
I also suggest that the position of the checkbox is moved down close
to the apply/Ok/Close buttons, which also might be a hint of what it
is for. The more I think about it, the more I like the name as it is.
I don't think it is a matter of name, it is rather a matter of
context.
So, he thinks it might be good to move the check box close to Apply,
and "remove" Apply when it is checked.
Removing is probably not so straight forward, since you can change the
selection after opening the dialog. You'd have to keep track of that
and add the Apply button when that's done etc.

I've renamed it and re-organised, but not removed OK/Apply, as I mentioned
on the list.
